Episode 315
During this Pandemic, I have heard the term situational awareness spoken more times than I can ever remember. Media pundits, medical experts, emergency managers – they’re all telling us it’s important to maintain situational awareness. In one respect, this warms my heart because situational awareness has been my passion topic for more than 15 years.
But in other respects, it causes me to worry because most people have very little understanding about what situational awareness is or how to develop and maintain it. This program takes the mystery out of the concept and explains it all.

Rich,
For us old techno-challenged farts, is there a way to download to mp3 (I don’t use apple)?
Thanks!
Bob
Bob,
You can access iTunes without using an Apple computer. Go to http://www.iTunes.com and download iTunes. Then search for SAMatters Radio and you can download it. If you have any trouble, just go to YouTube and search “How to download a podcast from iTunes” in the search box. This will send you to several video tutorials that will talk you through the process. Thanks for the question.
Rich
Your last episode with chief Dave Casey was great. Great thoughts on training. Nothing more frightening to me than a young Firefighter saying I can do that Capt’n. I watched a video on you tube about it!”
It is paralyzing when you actually try to process the concept that someone thinks they have competency in a skill because they watched a YouTube video!
I am reminded of the great movie Good Will Hunting. Watching any electronic information or educational materials doesn’t engage enough senses to perform competently, or more importantly, safely!
There are good ideas generated by video training… but that’s about it! That’s my 2 cents!
Chris,
Thanks for sharing your feedback. Your experience, shared with others, adds value. I think you’re right about video training… it generates good ideas (and I’d add it can build cognitive knowledge), but it surely does nothing to build muscle memory, which was Dave’s (and your) observation.
Rich
