Dr. Richard B. Gasaway, Fire Chief (ret.) has been contracted to provide situational awareness training for National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) Line-of-Duty Death Investigators. The training, stated for September 28, 2023 in at NIOSH’s Morgantown, West Virginia offices will focus on helping accident investigators better understand issues with situational awareness, human factors and high-risk decision making processes during incidents where firefighters have died.
“The work of NIOSH’s accident investigation teams has been instrumental in helping firefighters better understand how firefighters are killed while working in high-risk, high-consequence environments. I am extremely honored to be working with this dedicated group and helping them with their critical mission to reduce firefighter fatalities” noted Dr. Richard B. Gasaway, President of Gasaway Consulting Group.
In 1998, Congress recognized the need to address the national problem of work-related firefighter deaths, and funded NIOSH to implement a firefighter safety initiative. The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) conducts independent investigations of firefighter line-of-duty deaths and recommends ways to prevent deaths and injuries.
Gasaway Safety Solutions, a subsidiary of Gasaway Consulting Group, LLC, headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, focuses on helping individuals and teams understand human error, reduce the impact of situational awareness barriers, and improve high-risk decision making.
